Who Qualifies for SSI?
SSI is a federal program for people who can’t work because of serious health problems and who have very limited income and resources.
SSI is designed for people who haven’t been able to build up work credits with Social Security or savings. It’s a safety net when you’ve got nowhere else to turn.
If you have a substantial work record but can’t work anymore because of a bad turn in your health, you could qualify for another benefits program, Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI).
To be eligible for SSI, Social Security will look at:
- Your medical condition: It must be serious enough to stop you from working. And it must appear unlikely to improve for at least a year or be life-threatening.
- Your financial situation: Your income and the value of things you own must be very limited.
- Your citizenship or immigration status: You must meet specific legal residency requirements.
What does Supplemental Security Income pay?
In 2025, the maximum federal SSI payments were set at:
- $967/month for an eligible individual
- $1,450/month for an eligible individual with an eligible spouse
Each year there is typically a cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) increase from the previous year.
But your specific SSI benefits are reduced by your countable income. That means any income you receive from work, other support, or other sources could lower your monthly check.
Some states, including Georgia, offer state supplemental payments to increase the total you receive under SSI
