If you’re ill and unable to work, Social Security Disability can give you a financial lifeline. How much can you expect to receive if you’re approved?
The answer depends in part on what kind of benefits you qualify for. The size of the monthly check is different for different people.
Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) are the two disability assistance programs run by Social Security with different rules and ways of calculating benefits.
A Georgia disability lawyer from Silver & Archibald can help you find out which benefits program best suits your needs, assist with your application, and help you understand how much Social Security Disability may pay in your case.
For the total amount of benefits we’ve won for our clients, Silver & Archibald is the top Georgia disability law firm in Social Security’s numbers.
Many applicants for SSDI and SSI benefits get denied. The process isn’t easy. But our disability attorneys have decades of experience guiding clients through it. We can help you reclaim your life.
SSDI is for people who were working but now find themselves unable to hold a job and support themselves due to medical conditions.
When you finally win benefits and Social Security calculates your monthly checks, it will look at your years of earnings and calculate your Average Indexed Monthly Earnings (AIME).
Then it applies what’s known as a Primary Insurance Amount (PIA) to find your monthly benefit. The PIA sets what portion of your past earnings you receive in the form of disability benefits. The higher your past income, the smaller the percentage of it you get.
This calculation method is why different applicants receive different amounts in benefits.
You also have to keep in mind that there is a maximum amount of SSDI benefits, and that maximum can increase each year due to cost-of-living adjustments, or COLAs.
In 2026, the Social Security Administration raised the maximum possible payment by 2.8% to $4,152 per month for an individual. Few people receive the maximum because only the highest earners would reach it.
The average monthly benefits payment—reflecting a more common amount people receive—rose to $1,630 in 2026.
People who qualify for SSDI benefits usually receive more than those who receive SSI benefits, but there is plenty of variance in how much each person receives each month.
A Georgia disability lawyer helps you secure the maximum benefits possible for you. You don’t pay an attorney fee until you win your case.
SSI disability is not calculated with any work history of the applicant in mind. You can receive these benefits even if you were never able to work due to a disability.
The maximum benefit for SSI can also increase with the annual COLA, rising to $994 for an individual and $1,491 for a couple in 2026.
However, it’s important to note that other benefits and income could affect how much SSI disability you actually receive.
You need to keep track of any other aid you get, including food stamps and housing assistance, and your overall assets must remain low.
Individuals can’t have more than $2,000 in financial assets, and couples can’t have more than $3,000, outside of their primary home and one car. The government hasn’t updated those limits since 1989.
Other forms of public benefits can reduce how much you get from SSI. One-time payouts, like inheritances or legal settlements, can affect your eligibility for benefits.
It’s important to work with an attorney who helps you figure out if you qualify for SSI disability and checks if you have a financial situation could cause you to lose your benefits.
No matter what kind of Social Security Disability benefits you apply for, getting the financial assistance you need can be an uphill battle.
